UNDERSTANDING GUM DISEASE

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, commonly called gum disease or pyorrhea, develops when bacterial plaque accumulates around and below the gumline.

HOW IT DEVELOPS

Plaque Around the Gumline Can Trigger Inflammation

Bacterial plaque can accumulate around the teeth and extend below the gumline. The resulting inflammation may initially affect the gums and, if it progresses, damage the supporting tissues and bone around the teeth.

01 Bacterial Plaque
02 Gum Inflammation
03 Supporting-Tissue Damage
01 EARLY STAGE

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease. It may cause red, swollen or bleeding gums without significant damage to the supporting bone.

Red or swollen gums Bleeding during cleaning No significant bone damage
02 ADVANCED STAGE

Periodontitis

In periodontitis, the supporting tissues and bone around the teeth are gradually damaged. Teeth may become mobile and, without appropriate treatment, may eventually require removal.

Supporting-tissue damage Progressive bone loss Loose or shifting teeth
GUM DISEASE MAY PROGRESS SILENTLY Periodontal disease can progress without significant pain.

Regular gum examinations are important even when symptoms seem mild or there is no obvious dental discomfort.

PERIODONTAL WARNING SIGNS

When Should You Schedule a Gum Examination?

Arrange a periodontal assessment if you notice one or more of the following changes.

14 warning signs
01 Bleeding while brushing or flossing
02 Red, swollen or tender gums
03 Gum recession
04 Teeth appearing longer
05 Persistent bad breath
06 Unpleasant taste in the mouth
07 Pus between the teeth and gums
08 Food collecting between teeth
09 New gaps developing between teeth
10 Loose or shifting teeth
11 Pain while chewing
12 Sensitivity around exposed tooth roots
13 Changes in the way your teeth meet

Early assessment matters. Early diagnosis may allow treatment before extensive supporting-bone damage occurs.

ADVANCED PERIODONTAL CARE Flap Surgery with Grafting

Periodontal Flap Surgery with Grafting

Periodontal flap surgery may be recommended when deep gum pockets remain after non-surgical treatment and cannot be cleaned effectively through routine home care.

During the procedure, the gum tissue is gently lifted to provide access to the tooth roots and supporting bone. Deposits and infected tissue are removed, and the area is thoroughly cleaned.

When suitable, bone-grafting material, membranes or regenerative materials may be placed to support healing in selected bone defects.

Deep-Pocket Management Root-Surface Access Selected Bone Regeneration
When Flap Surgery with Grafting May Be Considered
  • Deep periodontal pockets
  • Advanced gum disease
  • Bone loss around teeth
  • Persistent infection after deep cleaning
  • Irregular bone contours
  • Difficult-to-clean root surfaces
  • Selected periodontal defects suitable for regeneration
Important Treatment Consideration

The possibility of regenerating lost supporting tissue depends on the shape, location and severity of the defect. Bone grafting cannot guarantee complete restoration of all lost bone.

Not sure which gum treatment you require? A periodontal examination is required before recommending a suitable treatment plan.

No. Occasional trauma from forceful brushing can cause bleeding, but repeated bleeding may indicate gum inflammation and should be examined.

Gingivitis is inflammation limited mainly to the gums. Periodontitis involves damage to the supporting fibres and bone around the teeth. Gingivitis is often reversible, while bone loss from periodontitis may not be completely reversible.

Periodontitis can usually be controlled, but it has a risk of recurrence. Long-term success requires effective daily cleaning, risk-factor management and regular periodontal maintenance.

Mobility caused by inflammation may improve after treatment in some cases. The result depends on how much supporting bone remains, the bite and the severity of disease. Severely compromised teeth may have a guarded prognosis.

Periodontal surgery is generally performed under local anaesthesia. Post-treatment tenderness or swelling may occur and is managed according to the clinician’s instructions.
