What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown, sometimes called a cap, covers the visible portion of a prepared natural tooth or is attached to a dental implant.
A crown may help:
- Protect a weakened tooth
- Restore a fractured or severely worn tooth
- Support a tooth with a large filling
- Restore a root-canal-treated tooth
- Improve tooth shape or appearance
- Rebuild comfortable biting and chewing
- Complete a dental implant restoration
- Support a fixed dental bridge
A crown is not automatically required for every damaged tooth. A filling, inlay, onlay, veneer or another conservative restoration may be more appropriate when enough healthy tooth structure remains.
