Ceramic brackets can be more delicate than metal brackets. Elastics may become stained by certain foods and beverages, so careful maintenance and dietary precautions are important.

The recommended retainer type and wearing schedule depend on the original tooth position, bite and treatment result. Many patients require long-term wear to reduce relapse.

A damaged, loose or poorly fitting retainer should be checked promptly.
